Dean – School of Medicine

UC Davis has launched a nationwide recruitment for Dean of the School of Medicine (Dean-SOM). The Dean-SOM has a solid-line reporting relationship to the Vice Chancellor-Human Health Sciences and CEO for UC Davis Health and has a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor. The position has primary responsibility for the UC Davis School of Medicine. The Dean-SOM will participate in campuswide policy development through membership on the Provost’s Leadership Council and the Council of Deans.

The Dean-SOM supports the work of faculty and the appropriate governance bodies in reviewing and updating existing curricula and the development of new programs, as appropriate.

The Dean-SOM is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the School of Medicine’s research portfolio, with responsibility for strategic planning, space assignments, matching and bridging funds, and representing the school at the institutional and national level. In addition, the Dean is responsible for developing, in collaboration with the faculty and staff, the vision that sets the principal goals and priorities for the School of Medicine’s continuing development as a premier academic medical institution; enhancement and celebration of diversity of personnel and programs; and strategic planning and implementation. The Dean-SOM is responsible for the oversight, administration and operations performance of the School of Medicine and ensures that the SOM is in compliance with regulatory requirements and standards of appropriate accrediting bodies. The Dean-SOM will be responsible for external affairs and development aimed at enhancing the visibility of the SOM at regional, state, and national levels.

The Dean-SOM must have an M.D. degree, appropriate board certification or comparable professional recognition, and the credentials to qualify as a tenured full professor; must be a visionary and strategic thinker and leader with knowledge and experience in integrated academic health centers and preeminent academic credentials; and a must possess a deep appreciation and understanding of the current transitional period in health care delivery, including funding, and the concomitant challenges for current models of academic health care. The recruitment advisory committee, chaired by Michael Lairmore, dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, and co-chaired by Saul Schaefer, professor of cardiovascular medicine, is composed primarily of faculty, staff and students.
