Chief of Staff to the Chancellor
Jason Stewart joined the Office of the Chancellor as its chief of staff in September 2026. He serves as a senior strategic advisor to the chancellor, championing institutional priorities across the UC Davis main campus and UC Davis Health. With delegated authority, he represents and acts on behalf of the chancellor and oversees key units. Stewart also advances legislative, community and UC systemwide engagement, and helps safeguard the institution’s financial, operational and reputational integrity.
Prior to joining the Office of the Chancellor, Stewart was the assistant executive vice chancellor and chief of staff in the Office of the Provost from 2023 to 2026. In that role, he advised on academic affairs, budget, enrollment planning, labor relations, shared governance, executive personnel matters and crisis response. From 2009 to 2014, he served as assistant director and the principal budget analyst in the Office of Budget and Institutional Analysis. He led work on a campus budget model that governed the allocation of more than $600 million in institutional resources, a framework that continues to guide resource allocation at UC Davis. Stewart concurrently served as a senior advisor to the UC Davis Office of Inclusive Excellence from 2019 to 2022.
Stewart joined UC Davis in 2009 after working at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington, D.C. He also served for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mongolia.
Stewart holds a master’s degree in public management from the University of Maryland and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Memphis.
