2018: Setting the Foundation

2018: Setting the Foundation

Based on the feedback from the previous year, Chancellor May was ready to move ideas forward. He launched the effort for UC Davis’ 10-year strategic plan, “To Boldly Go,” a roadmap to take the university’s excellence and impact to new heights. It included providing a world-class educational experience and strengthening our diversity. Further goals were to make accelerate UC Davis a driver of innovation and entrepreneurship, and maximize the university’s visibility around the world.

Chancellor May shared his vision for UC Davis with leaders, such as Governor Jerry Brown and Congresswoman Doris Matsui. He celebrated new opportunities, including plans for a new UC Davis Rehabilitation Hospital in Sacramento. Chancellor May also announced his plans for Aggie Square, a hub of research and innovation that spans the entire university and includes partnerships with businesses and the surrounding community.

Chancellor May also sought to improve the “town-gown” relationship between UC Davis and the city. In September, a memoranda of understanding (MOU) was signed between the university, the city of Davis and Yolo County to address such issues as student housing and transportation.

Serving the basic needs of students remained a key priority. In February, Chancellor May launched task forces to address affordable housing, mental health care and food security for students. He also engaged in service leadership, such as serving a “Moonlight Breakfast” with other campus leaders for students during finals week.
