Enable and support research that matters at the frontiers of knowledge, across and between the disciplines, in support of a healthy planet and the physical and societal well-being of its inhabitants.

 

STRENGTHENING THE FOUNDATION OF OUR RESEARCH ENTERPRISE

  • Identify the highest priority capital needs to strengthen infrastructure
  • Strengthen research support services

 

ACHIEVING THE NEXT DECADE OF RESEARCH EXCELLENCE

  • Coordination and recognition of new research opportunities
    • Creating a support system to help campus researchers recognize new possibilities for collaboration and initiate partnerships
    • Providing seed funding, with the potential for continuing support, through the Office of Research
  • New space for interdisciplinary collaboration
  • New sources of support for research
    • The “Big Ideas” campaign
    • Expand endowed faculty support
    • Diversify extramural funding
    • Increase support for grant preparation
    • Enhance opportunities for industry collaboration
    • Increase revenue from development of intellectual property

 

RAISING THE VISIBILITY OF BROAD AREAS OF RESEARCH EXCELLENCE ACROSS THE UNIVERSITY

  • Identifying all potential clusters of research excellence
  • Choosing leadership for the clusters and working with these leaders to implement the process of coordination
  • Formalizing campus support for these clustered groups, which in some cases may involve consolidation of resources already dedicated to individual programs
  • Devising communications strategies to take advantage of these broad clusters

  • Research activity; including extramural awards by source, expenditures, and publications
  • Research space; including improvements in both quantity and quality of space
  • Major faculty awards and recognition
  • Growth in interdisciplinary research projects
