Professor Alan Bennett led a team of UC Davis researchers who published a study on an indigenous corn species which obtains a majority of its nitrogen from the air — allowing the corn to grow up to 16 feet devoid of conventional fertilizing techniques. The discovery could lead to a reduction of fertilizer use for corn, one of the world’s major cereal crops, which could be huge for food security and environmental impact.
