UC Davis has launched a nationwide recruitment for the Vice Chancellor – Human Health Sciences. The Vice Chancellor for Human Health Sciences (VC-HHS) reports directly to the Chancellor and has primary responsibility for the UC Davis Medical Center, a 627-bed acute care hospital and a 1,000-member physician practice group, as well as responsibility for coordinating the entire UC Davis Health (UCDH), which includes both the School of Medicine and the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing. The VC-HHS participates in campus-wide policy development through membership on theChancellor’s Leadership Council and the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors.
The VC-HHS is responsible for leadership of UCDH including setting the vision and goals for UCDH continuing development as a premier academicmedical institution; guide and mentor the UCDH leadership team in appropriate collaboration with UC Davis administration; along with the Dean – School of Medicine, maintain an appropriate balance between the UCDH academic mission and its health care responsibilities, and ensure that the financialpriorities and policies are aligned with this balance; serve as the principal spokesperson for the UCDH to communicate the organization’s vision andpriorities to its faculty and staff, to the UC Davis administration, the UC Office of the President, and to key external communities, including the diversecommunities directly served by UCDH; represent the UCDH in appropriate venues to State and Federal agencies; and enhance and celebrate the diversity of personnel and programs throughout UCDH.
Other responsibilities include Strategic Planning and Implementation; Management and Administration (including annual and longer-term budget) and be responsible, in consultation when appropriate with the Hospital CEO, for the recruitment, selection and evaluation of health care executives for the UCDMC in a timely manner and for maintaining a work environment that fosters and rewards truly outstanding performance and the highest standards of quality in the delivery of health care; External Affairs and Development; Clinical Services; and Research.
The successful candidate will have an MD degree, appropriate board certification or comparable professional recognition, and the credentials to qualify as a tenured full professor at UC Davis. In addition, the Vice Chancellor will be a visionary and strategic thinker with knowledge and experience in integrated academic health centers and preeminent academic credentials; have demonstrated ability for leadership and management; the ability to work with faculty to develop a vision and strategy within an environment of shared governance; experience in building partnerships internally and externally; demonstrated financial and administrative skills; ability to grow the research enterprise, and preferably, a personal history of NIH research support; a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion; a record of success in obtaining extramural funding and philanthropic support; and a collaborative spirit. He/she will possess the political acumen and diplomatic skills to forge productive partnerships. Finally, the successful candidate will share the University’s Principles of Community, which are characterized by respect, integrity, openness and responsiveness and by consultation and collaboration.
